Summer is coming! And that means more trips to the bach for many of you. Lying in the sun, having a family BBQ, and taking it nice and easy for as many long weekends as your boss will let you get away with.
But what isn't so easy is decorating the bach. Some of the things you buy for the city home can look a bit out of place at the beach. But with so many talented Kiwi artists, there is a huge selection of prints perfect for any bach, be it the modern architectural build, or the old cabin passed down through the generations.
From affordable little prints, to limited edition collectables, there is an option for everyone.
And don't forget, if you buy any print through us, then you will get a discount off custom framing it!
LIZ ABBOTT:
These sweet little bird prints are the perfect option for the tiny corner or awkward piece of wall. They're incredibly affordable, and will look great in a modern space or the classic bach.
From the Kingfisher to the Tui, if you have a favourite bird (or a particular friend who hangs out in the trees) there will be the perfect option for you. Each bird comes in different sizes up to around the A5 size.
GREG STRAIGHT:
Graphic designer Greg Straight has a wide variety of prints that range from sunny at the beach, to snowy in Cadrona. No matter what, you will find one you will like.
Better yet, his prints are super affordable and come in a variety of sizes so you can fit it to any wall size.
And yet ANOTHER bonus, because they are standard A sizes (A4, A3, A2) they fit straight into our standard frame range. They make a perfect affordable, but quality option when it comes to putting a print on the wall.
Just don't forget the UV glass if you're fortunate to have a bach that gets bathed in natural light!
TONY OGLE:
Tony Ogle is a Kiwi icon for his beachy and bachy prints. With limited edition prints in runs of 150, his work is the next step up in price point from Greg Straight, of the most perfect option for any bach.
These prints will need custom frames, as none of his works are standard in size, but as with everything we sell you get 10% off your custom framing if you buy the print through us! Win win!
We have a couple of Tony Ogle prints in stock currently, many of which are framed and ready to walk out the door, so come in and snap them up before they're gone!
ROSS JONES:
Ross Jones has the perfect work for the more modern bach. With bright and clean prints of his gorgeous original paintings, and coming in at different price points for different sizes, there is something for everyone. If you want a bigger statement grab one of the original limited edition prints. If you have a smaller spot on the wall, or don't have the budget for the larger prints, then the portfolio prints are where it's at. At $850 vs $35o, Jones is definitely tailoring his offering to serve anyone who loves his work.
If you love any of his prints, we can get them in stock and frame them for you. As with all other prints, when you buy them with us you get a discount off the framing! We have a standard pricing for the frame and print combo, at $1150 to $1500 for the original prints and $450 for the newer portfolio prints. It's guaranteed to be the same level of archival quality framing that we do for all our custom framing.

The 2018 Framing Trends - What Has Been Popular This Year]]>http://www.framebyframe.co.nz/single-post/2018/11/01/The-2018-Framing-Trends---What-Has-Been-Popular-This-Yearhttp://www.framebyframe.co.nz/single-post/2018/11/01/The-2018-Framing-Trends---What-Has-Been-Popular-This-YearWed, 31 Oct 2018 21:04:00 +0000
It's interesting watching what trends develop in the interior decorating world, because it so directly influences what you guys order from us!
From simple box frames, to angled frames, grey to natural wood, there have definitely been a few trends featuring heavily in our orders, and we thought it would be good to share those with you!
THE SIMPLE BOX FRAME:
You can't go wrong with these. A clean and simple look that works with most every interior design taste, these are good when it comes to framing for a lifetime because no matter how your taste changes over time, your frames will always match.
This family comes in several different profiles, the most commonly ordered of which is the standard box frame, but they are all very frequently on our order sheets.
Classic and incredibly versatile, these frames are great on just about anything that comes in the door.
THE GROVE COLLECTION:
These have for sure been some of our top selling frames in the past year. From the day the collection was introduced, our customers have been loving them, and we completely understand why. With a range of colours, and a very neutral palette, they are incredibly versatile frames. From a black wash colour that is perfect when a painted black is a little to heavy, to a soft taupe brown that has been perfect on kids prints, the light grey that works just as well on a degree as is does on a print, to the natural wood that was such a perfect neutral wood that it became the sample we used for our shop frame series.
For the colours alone these samples are the perfect option for so many pieces, but the fact that they come in so many different profiles (8 to be exact) helps a great deal also.
TALL, ULTRA SKINNY BOX FRAMES:
This has been a huge seller for us in the past year too. Very tall and very skinny box frames. The thin frame, big mat look was fashionable for framing in the 80s and early 90's, and as with fashion generally, it has come back around with a more modern twisT. These frames are versatile and make anything you frame them in look ultra modern. Whether you're floating your artwork or over-mounting it, these will give you a great final product. They fill a very noticeable gap in the lineup and both us and our customers have been loving it.
These are particularly great when floating small prints or framing smaller objects because the frame is narrow so as to not overpower the pieces, but deep enough to handle the dramatic floated look.
ANGLED FRAMES:
We have had a range of angled frames for many years, with them being a pretty constant popular option, but the past year or two the options have expanded and it has made the use of angled frames even more versatile. Instead of subtle angles, more dramatic and bigger samples have been introduced to try and make a feature out of your angled frame. The above Grove Collection came out with the most extreme of the new options, and our suppliers quickly followed those up with a painted black and white due to their popularity. Not long after, the happy medium option came out which is one of the most versatily angled frame options we have. Between ultra skinny box frames, and angled frames, if has been a year for something modern and clean but a little different to make your framing look that much more special.
Angled frames are great on any number of things, but look especially cool on photography whether its framed up to the edge or matted.
GREY FRAMES:
You asked, and our suppliers delivered. The past 2 years we noticed an increase in people asking for grey frames, and for a while we had no options to show you, but our trusty suppliers heard your cries and we now have a selection of grey options. A couple of them are in the above grove options, but they also came out with some smaller profiles in a range of painted grey finishes.
We feel there is still some room to expand this range, as we feel like there are still some gaps to be filled, but we're slowly getting them!
THE NATURAL WOOD PHENOMENON:
Everyone will have noticed this with interior decor style generally, but natural wood has been huge for us the past few years, and over that time our suppliers have come out with more and more options. Once a very limited range, there are now over 40 light natural wood options to choose from, with different undertones to ensure there will be one that matches your artwork.
OUR PREDICTIONS FOR 2019:
The Gold Frame
Watching the trends, we're thinking we will see a lot more people wanting that very bright looking gold finish that is coming out in detailing on furniture. We have a couple of options in store for this currently, but we may end up seeing a few more coming from our suppliers. Typically with a gold, a mire antiqued finish is applied in order to make it more neutral and versatile but because this is quite a traditional look the more modern styled frames are a bit brighter and more of a statement.
These will look particularly good with a lot of the foliage and floral prints we have seen becoming popular over the past few years, as well as any black and white prints, but are actually surprisingly versatile!
Modern Retro
The other trend we are noticing is that mid century furniture is coming back into fashion. Dark walnut wood, white detailing, and clean but classic lines is the style we're seeing in furniture, and this range of frames that have just been introcuced perfectly accompany that.
Modern retro is how we're jokingly talking about them around the studio. They seem like they will be quite flexible options, but again will look quite good on some of the same things the gold frames will. Foliage and floral type prints, but also anything with warm bright colours will be nicely complimented by the white grain and the accent of warm wood finish.

Introducing the Ross Jones Portfolio Prints!]]>http://www.framebyframe.co.nz/single-post/2017/11/14/Introducing-the-Ross-Jones-Portfolio-Printshttp://www.framebyframe.co.nz/single-post/2017/11/14/Introducing-the-Ross-Jones-Portfolio-PrintsTue, 14 Nov 2017 10:30:33 +0000
Limited edition prints are hard. Each artist releases an exclusive number of each print to be fought over, and once they're gone, they're gone. The team know a few people who have missed out on some of the classics from Ross Jones because they sold out, the last few always disappear so quickly. What's great is now, you don't have to freak out about the fact that there are only one or two Rocket Man's still available!
Introducing the VERY recently launched Portfolio collection of prints from Ross Jones. Mini reproductions of all the classics in a new limited edition run of 150. With the promise of more iconic pieces being transformed into their mini counterparts in the near future, Ross has started with 6 new versions of the old favourites. From Rocket Man, to Hokey Pokey, Red Racer to One More Game, the starting selection already has something for every Ross Jones fan.
The Portfolio Collection is a little special though. Each of them come in their only folio packaging that is almost as nice as the print itself (almost) with a little synopsis about Ross, his artwork, his career, as well as including the authencity certificate as proof of their legitimacy.
This collection are also significantly smaller in size than their limited edition counterparts. With a paper size of _____ by _____, they are a far more friendly for those of you with little free wall space (we're all putting our hands up to that one over here). Plus you could get away with having a couple in your house without them taking up too much room! Such a good idea if you're indecisive when it comes to choosing your favourite.
We have standardised pricing for buying them framed, with your choice of white or black frame depending on your taste (and the print you choose!). You can't go wrong with a standard box frame on Ross' work (its how 90% of the large ones we have sold have gone out the door) but we're always open to changing it up if you want something a little different. We don't double as a custom framing studio for nothing!
We're clearly very excited about these, and have been waiting for months for them to arrive finally. They're even better than we expected them to be, and we can't wait for you to come and check them out!
Ross Jones Portfolio Collection
Fine art limited edition prints, archivally printed using the giclee printing process
Editions of 150 (currently 6 versions available)
Prints are $480 framed.

New In: Ross Jones' 2017 Releases + Something Special...]]>http://www.framebyframe.co.nz/single-post/2017/11/14/New-In-Ross-Jones-2017-Releases-Something-Specialhttp://www.framebyframe.co.nz/single-post/2017/11/14/New-In-Ross-Jones-2017-Releases-Something-SpecialTue, 14 Nov 2017 10:11:09 +0000
We always look forward to the new Ross Jones releases, just seeing what he comes up with next to add to the collection is a lot of fun. Being one of our top selling artists, we also love that we have new things to show all of you! We've got two new pieces to share, but before we do that we have something a little exciting to show you first.
The Colour Study
For the first time, Ross has given us one of his gorgeous colour studies! This one for his work 'En Route' is absolutely stunning in its print form, and the colour study gives us insight into how amazing the original must have been.
Ross' colour studies are part of the process for creating each of his full sized paintings (the ones that get converted into limited edition prints for the consumer market). Last year he began including them in exhibitions and they have started going up for sale as essentially mini originals of the hero pieces. The originals tend to fetch between $25k and $30k, but this little baby could be yours for $2000!
We currently have this onesitting in the window with its limited edition counterpart and they look so good together. Get in touch if you're interested in taking it home with you! This is an original, and the 'En Route' colour study is exclusive to Frame by Frame, so it will be the only opportunity to get your hands on it!
The 2017 Print Releases
Destination Moon
We've pretty excited about both of these too. 'Destination Moon' can best be described as the newer and slightly moodier 'Rocket Man'. The twilight setting for this makes it rich in colour and amazing to look at, plus the slightly more muted colours makes it an easy fit into a lot of home decor situations. With 'Rocket Man' being one of his most popular prints, naturally bringing the rocket back somehow was a perfect fit.
Hold the Line
Now for 'Hold the Line'. Similarly to 'Destination Moon', you may notice that this has similar vibes to another of Ross' popular prints. We Come in Peace' has been such a big seller for us as it is the perfect nostalgic print for so many people. The only issue is that it is one of his bigger sized prints (meaning you need to have a decent amount of wall space to do it any justice). This one is similar in theme with tin robots and army men galore. Best part, it's the slightly smaller size more common with his prints making it more flexible for people with not a lot of wall space. Both are awesome and we recommend you come in and have a look at both of them if you're into the tin robots like we are.
Ross Jones' Fine Art Prints
Limited edition runs of 49
High quality fine art prints, archivally printed using the giclee printing process
Unframed: $750
Framed: $1150
Get in touch if you're keen to get your hands on one! We try to have as many of Ross' prints in stock at a time as we can, but can also easily bring them in if you're after something we don't have on hand.

The Official Media Release:
More than 90 artists from around New Zealand are contributing to an art walk around Auckland CBD to raise money for the Asylum Seekers Support Trust.
The inaugural event, entitled Frame Works, sees artists given a wooden picture frame to transform into a unique and desirable work of art.
Artists include sculptor Jeff Thomson, painters Evan Woodruffe, Flox, Peata Larkin and Anna Leyland.
From 22 April, these frames will be displayed in shop windows in a walkable trail from Britomart to AUT through the Laneways, High Street and Lorne Street.
Art lovers, families and the community will be encouraged to find and choose their favourite pieces, with an app and a map to help locate the artworks, learn about the artist, bid online or donate directly to the charity.
The event will culminate with an art auction on 2 May. The frames will be sold in a gala event, by live and online auctions, with art auctioneer Charles Ninow of Bowerbank Ninow, at the Quay Project in Britomart.
This fundraiser is run by the Asylum Seekers Support Trust - a charitable organisation that advocates for and supports asylum seekers – and proceeds will be used to continue our important work with these vulnerable members of our community.
Event curator, Alix Bachmann, an experienced arts manager, has been working on the event on a mainly voluntary basis for over a year. She says the ‘frame work’ theme reflects the needs of the asylum seekers that the event is supporting:
“For many people, and some entire social groups, the framework of their lives has suddenly disappeared because of war, a change of political regime, persecution, violence and terror. They are looking for a safe haven, a place to rebuild their lives, to re-establish their framework of home, work, family and friends.”

Starting from March 20th we will have new shop hours!
Our front of house superstar, Karyn, is prepping to show her work in the 2017 Venice Biennale, and we are so excited. In order to get everything ready in time, she has had to shift her hours, so we have too!
We will now be open Tuesday through Saturday, with all of us taking a turn at front of house during the week.
Hours are now as follows:
Tuesday-Friday: 10am-6pm
Saturday: 10am-4pm
CLOSED Sunday and Monday
Read more about what Karyn is up to
Frame by Frame front-person Kāryn Taylor has been invited to exhibit her work at the 2017 Venice Biennale (www.karyntaylor.com). This is a huge coup for her and stands to build on her success at the Athens Art Fair last year and recent successes in Melbourne and Sydney as well as sales locally via Sanderson Gallery here in Newmarket. Previously New Zealand artists such as Michael Parekowhai, Judy Millar and Simon Denny have been celebrated on the world stage at this biannual event.
This year Lisa Reihana will be representing New Zealand and Kāryn will be showing her work alongside well established international artists in a satellite exhibition at the European Cultural Centre. Consequently Kāryn is obliged to reduce her hours at Frame by Frame so she can concentrate on her work for Venice. We decided in the interest of quality over quantity to reduce our trading hours this year accordingly and will therefore be open Tuesday to Saturday going forward.

We have always loved Greg Straight's prints for that perfect hit of Kiwiana goodness, and we have just got in a new batch! Just in time for Christmas, we have some of the old favourites and a few newbies! 'Good Day at the Bay' sold in less than a week last time.
The best thing about them? All of them are affordable, which makes them fantastic Christmas gifts. They would also make great decor for the bach this summer!

Artist Profile: Ross Jones]]>http://www.framebyframe.co.nz/single-post/2016/09/01/Artist-Profile-Ross-Joneshttp://www.framebyframe.co.nz/single-post/2016/09/01/Artist-Profile-Ross-JonesWed, 31 Aug 2016 22:04:42 +0000
Jones started out life in Otaki, and went to design school in Wellington upon leaving high school. From there he began creating commission paintings for companies all over the world. He now paints full time, and his works are in personal collections in England, Ireland, North America, Australia and, of course, New Zealand.
This year (2016), Jones only exhibited his work once, but this show had a twist. For the first time, he displayed his colour studies alongside the full size originals. Ross’ colour studies are 30cmx40cm paintings he does before completing the real thing to confirm his direction. Essentially these are mini versions of the works we all know and love. The paintings themselves are incredible. They are significantly larger than their print counterparts, and as a result of this they look striking on the wall. If you have a chance to check them out in person, take advantage. They are shown periodically around Auckland.
The main way you will experience a piece of Ross Jones’ work will likely be through his ever popular Giclee prints. On his website, Jones outlines the process he goes through to take his paintings and transform them into a digital print, his reasoning for choosing Giclee and the benefits of him creating his reproductions in this way.
The Giclee printing process is becoming more and more popular as the form for limited edition art reproductions. There are several reason for this, the quality in the finish and the archival, fade resistant inks being huge ticks in the pro’s column. The ink is of a superb quality, and is typically in a set of 6 or more colours for your printer which results in a wide colour gamut. Archival inks are fade resistant. Before Giclee printing, digital limited edition prints were produced in the lithograph printing process. This is what is used to print magazines or posters. It is no where near as robust as Giclee. You may have noticed that magazines fade rather quickly even if exposed to only a small amount of daylight. This is where the Giclee print really shines. Aside from the technical beauty to Giclee prints, Jones outlines his personal reasoning for the choice on his website.
Giclee prints still count is individual pieces of art due to them being printed one at a time, making them the digital equivalent of the traditional screen printing process. Jones prints them all himself, giving him complete control over the final product, as well as allowing him to keep the edition numbers lower than he may if he outsourced them. As such, he runs his prints in editions of 49. This combination of the personal touch and low edition numbers gives the prints a feeling of exclusivity that is lost with some limited edition reproductions. He will print, trim, sign and handcraft the final packaging all himself. So from start to finish, he has total control over the final outcome to ensure it it is the best it possibly can be.
On his website, he gives a broad outline of his process from start to finish, painting to print:
Once a painting has thoroughly dried it is carefully delivered across town to be digitally photographed.Upon receipt of the digital file I adjust the image meticulously to ensure colour accuracy and tonal precision.Strip tests are printed and compared. In some cases the colours will differ slightly from the original, but the overall colour impression remains true. When I produce a print it will have its own unique identity—in some cases I’ll change a tone slightly if I think it will enhance the overall look.
To read more about Ross Jones and his process, you can visit his website www.jonesthepainter.com. There you will also find his complete collection of prints. While we keep a good number of these in stock at all times, we don’t have the room for his whole collection! If you find one you absolutely love that we don’t have, we can order it in for you. This makes the framing process nice and easy (and means you get a discount off the framing too). Just give us a call, flick us an email or pop in store if you have any questions!

If you have been in to visit us in the last few weeks, you may have noticed all the changes happening in our carpark. Yes we know it sounds boring, but just give us a minute to talk about parking in Newmarket because we’re sure you’ll benefit from this.
Even if you have just driven past recently, you may have noticed our carpark has come under management from Wilson Parking. On the face of it you may not be falling over yourself about that. But this is actually good news for our customers because:
There are now free spaces available for you to use whereas previously the park was always fullFirst 30 minutes is FREEYou can extend to 2 hours FREE if you get a Parking Pass from us
Previously the carpark was often oversubscribed due to local workers parking there all day. Now the Pay and Display is up and running this has been minimised leaving parks free for you to use.
To have 30 minutes Free Parking all you need to do is print a free ticket at the machine and display it on your dashboard.
To extend this to 2 hours just pop in and see us for a 2 hour Parking Pass, this will need to be displayed on your dashboard. (remember we also have a back door accessible from the lower carpark - this is the door closest to the train tracks. See the photo set below for an explanation).

New Blood Pop: An Artist Profile of Brad Novak]]>http://www.framebyframe.co.nz/single-post/2016/07/28/New-Blood-Pop-An-Artist-Profile-of-Brad-Novakhttp://www.framebyframe.co.nz/single-post/2016/07/28/New-Blood-Pop-An-Artist-Profile-of-Brad-NovakThu, 28 Jul 2016 04:38:12 +0000
We first encountered Brad Novak in 2014 when he unveiled his latest collection. In an exhibition at his screen printers in Onehunga, a variety of pop culture street art images were displayed around the printing machinery. It was unlike anything we had seen before, and we were intrigued. His work sits on the scale between fine art and street art, using hand-collage and stencil spray painting techniques combined with the traditional screen printing process to create striking pop culture references with a message.
Novak lived in London in the early 2000’s, and the urban and street art scenes had a huge influence. He combined his love for street and pop art to create his urban series - the self titled ‘New Blood Pop’.
Novak describes New Blood Pop as being ‘...concerned with how we experience life itself, the 21st century issues we face such as inequalities in wealth and health, sustainability and globalization.’ It also deals with the idea of escapism through both science fiction and the superhero franchise. He says ‘of the things we choose to believe, what's real, and what's not? These works are global, flagrant, iconic and ironic’.
In the few short years that he has been creating work, Novak has managed to exhibit around the world, most notably in the US, Canada, UK and here, in New Zealand. He became the first New Zealand born artist to show work alongside legendary pop artists, including Andy Warhol and Roy Litchenstein, as well as figures like Banksy and Shepard Fairey (OBEY) in the street art world.
His most recent collection is what we are sharing with you here, and across our social media this week. Feel free to get in contact if you are curious about another colourway for any of the figures.
If you want to hear more about the process he goes through to choose his imagery, follow the link to his website. For his solo exhibition in Toronto, a local media team did an interview where he explains all. http://bit.ly/2afbfxK

Framing Vinyl | Flume 'Skin' and Radiohead 'A Moon Shaped Pool']]>http://www.framebyframe.co.nz/single-post/2016/07/21/Framing-Vinyl-Flume-Skin-and-Radiohead-A-Moon-Shaped-Poolhttp://www.framebyframe.co.nz/single-post/2016/07/21/Framing-Vinyl-Flume-Skin-and-Radiohead-A-Moon-Shaped-PoolThu, 21 Jul 2016 04:14:16 +0000
The music we listen to says a lot about who we are, When people see it, it tells them something about us. When we think about it, it engages the emotions and memories we associate with it. As such, having framed vinyl on your wall is the perfect way to showcase who we are through our space, as well as giving us something we love to look at, It's artwork that truly engages us emotionally. It's foolproof, and at Frame by Frame, we want to help you create that space for yourself.
With Flume being in town, we thought now would be the perfect time to share these awesome record frames with you as a source of inspiration. We got the chance to play with framing a couple of limited edition vinyl sets recently. One from Flume for his recent album "Skin' and one from Radiohead's new album 'A Moon Shaped Pool'. These records are just incredibly cool to look at, from the marble effect for 'Skin', to the pure white for 'A Moon Shaped Pool'.
We have always loved framing vinyl, and as such we have a range of ready made frames designed to frame the sleeve itself! At $90 per frame, they are a steal. They come with UV glass to ensure they artwork will never fade, and are a great way to decorate your walls with artwork you have an emotional connection with.
The frames in these images are all custom, which is primarily what we do. If you bring in the records, we will tailor make a frame to match the vibe of the album, whether you are wanting to frame the cover, the record itself, or both. More and more, as vinyl becomes popular again, the standard album issue is being supplemented by enhanced limited edition versions. The owner of these records has the normal version of both for playing purposes, and the limited edition ones for framing purposes. Because of this, they can be enjoyed both audibly and visually.
You will see in the images that we have placed the record on top of the mat board in most cases, but in the all white Flume frame, we have actually created a circular over mat. This covers the edge of the record making it appear more like a conventional piece or artwork. We have chosen to let the records speak for themselves here, keeping the colours simple and the frames the basic black and white. We have played with creating a real rock and roll feel with the white frame and the black mat for Radiohead. The white vinyl made this the perfect option here. But this is just the beginning, the options are endless!
We can't wait to see what you bring us!
Sidenote: These photographs were taken before the frames were completely finished so as to avoid the double reflection of the vinyl and the glass. Because of this, it looks like some of the boards have gaps where they shouldn't have gaps. These disappeared once the frames were properly assembled and everything was pinned in place.
