New Blood Pop: An Artist Profile of Brad Novak

We first encountered Brad Novak in 2014 when he unveiled his latest collection. In an exhibition at his screen printers in Onehunga, a variety of pop culture street art images were displayed around the printing machinery. It was unlike anything we had seen before, and we were intrigued. His work sits on the scale between fine art and street art, using hand-collage and stencil spray painting techniques combined with the traditional screen printing process to create striking pop culture references with a message.

Novak lived in London in the early 2000’s, and the urban and street art scenes had a huge influence. He combined his love for street and pop art to create his urban series - the self titled ‘New Blood Pop’.

Novak describes New Blood Pop as being ‘...concerned with how we experience life itself, the 21st century issues we face such as inequalities in wealth and health, sustainability and globalization.’ It also deals with the idea of escapism through both science fiction and the superhero franchise. He says ‘of the things we choose to believe, what's real, and what's not? These works are global, flagrant, iconic and ironic’.

In the few short years that he has been creating work, Novak has managed to exhibit around the world, most notably in the US, Canada, UK and here, in New Zealand. He became the first New Zealand born artist to show work alongside legendary pop artists, including Andy Warhol and Roy Litchenstein, as well as figures like Banksy and Shepard Fairey (OBEY) in the street art world.

His most recent collection is what we are sharing with you here, and across our social media this week. Feel free to get in contact if you are curious about another colourway for any of the figures.

If you want to hear more about the process he goes through to choose his imagery, follow the link to his website. For his solo exhibition in Toronto, a local media team did an interview where he explains all. http://bit.ly/2afbfxK
